Mariko is studying when she gets an email.
Checking it, she sees it's from the famous Professor Oak.
"Dear Mariko,
I can see you are determined and passionate about working for me. Come to my lab in Pallet Town at your earliest convenience and I may have a task for you to complete.

Finally. She had been waiting for that email for months now. Weeks and weeks ago, she had notified her teachers that she would soon be off on a pokemon adventure. It was common for kids a few years younger than she. Generally when people got her age they were in school to stay, not likely to go off and make a career with pokemon.
Mariko closed the e-mail and turned off her computer before turning to Pepper, her Eevee. The pokemon had been given to her by her mother in hopes she wouldn't be so lonely at school. It had helped quite a lot... and it helped her come up with a dream. "Well Pepper, it is time to go."
"'Vee!" The eevee squeeled in delight and ran off to fetch Mariko's do-rag.
Soon, the two are dashing out the halls and to the principle's office to notify them of her leave.

Caleb walks into his room and sees a care package from his mother with a note attached.
"Honey! Great news! I was telling Professor Oak how smart you are when he came to see my beautiful Janie last weekend at the contest in Viridian City. He just sent me an email that he has some thing he wants you to do. So here is a beautiful little Ralts to accompany you down to Pallet Town. I know you've always said you don't want to be a Pokemon Trainer, but just do this for me. All you have to do is meet with him!

Caleb sighs deeply after reading the note.
Opening the box he sees a pokeball, and reluctantly releases the little Ralts from the ball.
"What's your name little guy?"
The Ralts made a little noise, and Caleb's eyebrows rose.
"Rawlf? That's an interesting name. Well...let's go on to Pallet Town. I'm sure my Mom has made arrangements with the school."
He sighed again and gathered up his things then headed out to Route 4 to head towards Pallet Town.

With Pepper running at her heels, Mariko leaves the school and hefts a large backpack that has hardly a thing in it onto her shoulders. The little pokemon has a scarf about its neck and is prancing in its steps. The poor thing keeps lagging behind and has to break into a run now and again to catch up.
Mariko reaches Route 4 and pauses to read the sign, spotting one other person already on the trail.

[Scene: Route 4 from Cerulean City to Mt. Moon]  Route 4 is a windy road through the forest that heads from Cerulean City to Mt. Moon. The path between Cerulean City and Pewter City is well traveled and generally safe, but who knows what dangers you may encounter from Pokemon or trainers along the way. |

Caleb saunters along Rawlf at his side.
He seems to be talking very softly to himself, with only the Pokemon possibly able to hear. The little Ralts looks in the direction of Mariko and Pepper and makes a noise. Caleb stops and turns towards them.
"I guess you are headed to Pewter City too? Mind if we walk with you? I'm not sure about how much this little guy can protect me."
Rawlf meeps at him.
"You're right. You are big and fierce and scary. I'm sure all the scary dangerous Pokemon in the forest will just let us by."

The Eevee trots forward, its little nose twitching curiously.
"Pepper is a bit new to battling too, but it might help to go along. That looks rather fragile, though." Mariko points to the new travel buddy's pokemon before continuing down the road. She shouts over her should as if he will follow. "I'm sure it will make a wonderful pokemon for a Coordinater, though."

As Pepper twitches her nose at him, Rawlf meeps and reaches out his hand, projecting his thoughts thoughts into her head.
"We need to be sure we protect these two. Partners?"
Caleb sighs at the Coordinator comment and just thinks to himself "She is going to be SUCH a pain."
He then reluctantly follows her with Rawlf following at his side as Pepper bounds ahead to catch up to Trainer.

"You look familiar. I think we go to the same school... or went to the same school." Mariko comments as she lazily walks, watching the grass in case something jumps out as she heard in stories.

"Yeah, we had History together. I sat in the back. So why are you traveling? It seems pretty odd to just leave school in the middle of the session like that. I mean my Mom is making me go down to Pallet Town. What's your excuse for leaving?"
Caleb finally catches up and looks at Pepper and Rawlf meeps again at Pepper.
"They seem to like each other anyway."
Caleb hitches his backpack up on his shoulder and notices her warily watching the grass.
"I'm pretty sure this road is safe. It is traveled all the time, and I doubt wild Pokemon are just going to appear like that."

"I got a message from Professor Oak. I've been trying to be able to work for him for a while now. I just... decided it was time to do something new. Pepper did to, right?" She looks to her prancing pokemon who nods approvingly before moving to walk with Rawlf. "It is good to keep an eye out for things. You never know what might happen. Our pokemon aren't too strong so we need to keep an eye out for if we have to run. Spot problems early."

As Mariko and Caleb round the next corner, they hear the shriek of a Pokemon.
Hurrying forward, they see a large rat-shaped Pokemon trying to defend it's baby from a large bird Pokemon. The fighting is fierce and the rat-shaped Pokemon seems to be losing.
As the two look around, they see that they might be able to sneak by without being seen by the battling Pokemon.

Pepper puffs up and prepares to growl. Mariko hesitates. She is a snob at times but it is hard to see anyone or anything lose. She inches towards Caleb and whispers, hoping to not alert the bird. "Should we leave it? I don't think we can fight it but that little guy isn't going to last long."
